LOST OR STOLEN PASSPORT FAQ

Question:
What happens after I report my passport lost or stolen?
Answer:
It is important that you should report about lost or stolen passport if the original, physical version of it has been lost or stolen. When you report a U.S. passport lost or stolen, it becomes invalid, cannot be re-instated and cannot be used for travel.

Call the US Department of State toll-free at 1-877-487-2778 (TTY 1-888-874-7793).

Question:
Will my new passport have the same passport number as the one I lost?
Answer:

Definetely not. Your new passport will have a different number than has never been used on any other passport.

Answer:

We should inform you that if you find your lost passport after you have started the replacement process, that passport is considered cancelled and is no longer valid for travel. As soon as you have filed the DS-64 form, the State Department will cancel the passport you lost due to a safety procedure.

Question:
Can someone travel using my only passport number?
Answer:

No. No one can travel internationally using only a U.S. passport number. Travelers must present an original, physical version of a U.S. passport book or U.S. passport card upon entering a foreign country and when returning to the United States from a foreign country.

The U.S. passport book and passport card are highly secure documents with numerous security features designed to prevent successful counterfeiting.

We do not recommend reporting your U.S. passport lost or stolen if your passport number was compromised. You should only report your U.S. passport lost or stolen if the original, physical version of the passport book or passport card has been lost or stolen. Once you report a U.S. passport lost or stolen, it is invalid and cannot be used for international travel.

Question:
Can I travel if I have found my passport after reported that it was stolen?
Answer:

No. If you have already reported your passport lost or stolen, the passport is no longer valid and must not be used for travel. If you attempt to use your reported lost or stolen U.S. passport, you may encounter issues when traveling abroad.

After reporting your passport lost or stolen, you must apply for a new passport in person using Form DS-11.

Question:
I have difficulties with DS-11 form. What can I do?
Answer:
You can read our guide How to fill DS-11 Form (travelvisaexpress.com) and find all typical mistakes there.
Question:
Can I renew my passport  that was stolen with a passport agency instead of doing it myself?
Answer:
Yes, you definetely can and Travel Visa Express. #1 Visa and Passport service provider will be happy to help you!
Question:
How much does U.S. Passport cost?
Answer:
Passport book cost $130 (application fee).
Question:
My U.S. Passport was lost. What are U.S Passport requirements for lost or stolen Passport?
Answer:
You must submit your completed application, including citizenship evidence, photocopy of ID, photo, and fees, in person at a passport acceptance facility. You may be eligible to apply in person at a passport agency if you are traveling soon.
Question:

My lost passport is still valid, can I just renew it?

Answer:
No, in order to renew your passport, you must be able to submit your current valid passport with your application. If your passport is valid and lost, it is strongly recommended to report it lost in order to protect your identity. You can report it lost and apply for a new passport at the same time.
Question:

I found my lost passport, can I use it?

Answer:
Passports reported lost or stolen are immediately invalidated and can no longer be used for travel.
Question:

What if I'm not sure whether my passport was lost or stolen?

Answer:
If you are not sure whether your passport was lost or stolen, select the lost passport service and you can explain further in the part of the application known as the statement regarding a lost passport.
Question:

I lost my child's passport, can I replace it?

Answer:
Yes, you can replace it. Apply for a child passport and you will include a statement regarding a lost passport.
Question:

What do I do if I lost my passport while traveling overseas?

Answer:
For passports lost or stolen overseas, please contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Plan ahead and bring a copy of the information page of your passport and keep this backup copy in a different location than your passport. This can expedite the processing of your temporary passport at the consulate.
